Reviewing the Kodak Ultramax 400

Kodak Ultramax is one of the first films that I tried after joining the analog revolution. In fact, it was my very first film used for travel, after years of shooting with my DSLR. My uncle loaned me a Fisheye 2 just a few days before I went to Singapore for a trip, so I went around my nearby shopping mall (still didn’t know where to find cheaper films yet) to look for a roll to try out.

Unless it is a dedicated film or Lomography store film, it is very hard to find a wide range of films in malls nowadays. However, most stores still stock just one or two types, and this one that I went to had the Ultramax at that time. I chose the 400 over 200 for greater flexibility.

I tried the Fisheye 2 prior to the trip and had a rough idea of what situation works best with an ISO 400 film. Throughout my short trip, I tried to shoot under good sunlight and if at night, then I will rest the camera somewhere for a bulb shooting.

When I got my photos back from the lab, I was delighted. The colors are pleasant, not cross-processing kind of wackiness but just right. Even the night shots turned out in really vibrant colors! The film yields dull shades indoors, but so does many other films as well. However, this film really works across a wide range of daylight spectrum nicely – from the dazzling sunshine at the Universal Studios to the mild evening sky at the Marina Bay, this film captures all with great results.

If you are looking for a fuss-free and film with a higher chance of success rate, this is the film for you!
