Gallery: @tokcan Transforms Familiar Scenes With LomoChrome Purple & Metropolis

The LomoChrome films have always been a breath of fresh air for film photographers. They give us a chance to go beyond the natural colors of the world, and create new ways to see things that might otherwise seem mundane. Lomographer @tokcan captures images of his city of Istanbul on LomoChrome Metropolis and LomoChrome Purple, shifting what he usually sees through these unique color films. We also take a look at his winter photos of St. Petersberg through the use of LomoChrome Metropolis, where the muted sun goes hand in hand with the toned-down characteristics of this film.

Though winter has passed and we are enjoying the warmth of the sun, looking at @tokcan’s pictures of St. Petersberg can make anyone feel nostalgic for a winter wonderland. Using a sturdy Canon F-1, these winter shots look as if they are from the same decade that this camera was in production. The muted yellows and tinges of green bring out washed-out tones of found photographs you would discover at a thrift store. These postcard-like photos captured by @tokcan highlight how the film stock mixes with overcast lighting and frigid temperatures.

In his home city of Istanbul, @tokcan uses both LomoChrome Metropolis and LomoChrome Purple to showcase the city in different moods. It is home to many parks and gardens which allows you to take breaks from this fast-paced city. Using LomoChrome Purple in nature has always resulted in breathtaking results and it is wonderful to see how well @tokcan was able to shoot the different fauna of the gardens.

The LomoChrome Purple photos do have a washed-out vintage result similar to the LomoChrome Metropolis shots in the winter but you can also see how certain elements are more saturated such as the red flowers. Though Metropolis is mostly known for cityscapes and street photography, seeing it in a more natural setting shows the range of the film. Metropolis here looks more vibrant with the greens of these photos looking strong.

Showing more scenes of this cross-cultural city, @tokcan shoots many of Istanbul's famous landmarks using these special color films. Being made for these kinds of shots, the Metropolis film stock easily shines as it captures the timeless architecture of this historical city. On the other hand, using LomoChrome Purple is a daring choice but the film does well to highlight the shapes and forms of the structures.

Seeing LomoChrome Purple shots that capture the cityscape in the afternoon shows how the film can be manipulated to display more reddish pinks than its famed purple – possibly by taking this shot with a lower ISO setting. Though most of us are accustomed to more natural-looking film stocks, trying out the LomoChrome series of films will surely challenge your ideas of what a color film can do.
