A Day with Mum's Not Home and the Lomo'Instant Square

The Lomo'Instant Square is dedicated to all the sparks lighting up this beautiful, bizarre and bewildering world. We’re talking about the artists, the dreamers, the free spirits; the creatives who can’t live unless they’re spattering the earth with crazy ideas and irresistible energy.

Makui and Chow are the founders of cafe Mum's Not Home in Hong Kong. They share what they like and do what they love in this space, as if "mum is not home"! As former fashion designers, they also design clothes and accessories and share their creations in the cafe.

Hello Makui and Chow! Can you introduce yourselves and let our readers know more about you?

Hello, we are Makui and Chow, we used to work in the fashion design industry. Previously, we went to New Zealand and Australia for a working holiday. After returning to Hong Kong, we opened Mum's Not Home and no longer work for someone else. In Mum's Not Home, Makui is responsible for almost everything, and Chow is mainly responsible for painting.

How would you describe Mum's Not Home ?

It is a place with a lot of colours and plants. In fact, all things in Mum's Not Home , including homemade cakes, drinks, clothes, jewellery, tables and chairs, are the things that we adore. We also bring back souvenirs after travelling, for example the prayer flags from Tibet. Therefore, Mum's not Home represents everything we love.

What is the greatest satisfaction that Mum's Not Home brings to you?

Friends. It may be hard to meet new friends nowadays especially when you are at this age and working. However, we can easily make friends here with same interests even they are from different places with different identities.

Do you like instant photography?

Of course! Every piece filled with expectation and excitement. We enjoy waiting for the developing process with the mixture of different emotions.

What do you like about the square format?

In fact, we‘ve always loved the square format. In our own view, square looks more balanced which is more perfect.

If you are given a Lomo'Instant Square, where will you take it to and what will you shoot?

We want to bring it to India and shoot the vivid scenery. We think that instant photography should include more colorful things.

The lease of this place will be expired next year, what is your plan?

We don't actually have a plan as everything came all in a sudden. We were just being informed that the terms of our lease have been changed. Perhaps we will look around the area to see if there are any other places suitable for reopening Mum's Not Home. If not, we will do something else. There are still a lot of things that we want to do, for example, go for a long trip or to study abroad. We will come back to Hong Kong for sure, maybe at that time, we will encounter a new place, who knows?

Will you still open Mum's Not Home if you have a choice to step back?

Yes. After two years of working in Mum's Not Home, there is nothing to regret but happiness remains. We will still open Mum's Not Home if we can go back in time.
