Glastonbury As Seen Through the New Petzval 85 Lens by Taio Konishi

The Glastonbury Festival is arguably one of the most anticipated and renowned music festivals in the world. It is a joy to be able to watch it, and a privilege to capture scenes on and off stage. Apart from creating beautiful portraits, the Petzval Lens is great for adding an albeit subtle drama to the already spectacular scenes of music festivals. Japanese photographer Taio Konishi photographed this year’s Glastonbury with a Petzval 85mm Art Lens, and here are some of the photos. He also talks about his Petzval-meets-Glastonbury experience in this exclusive.

Taio Konish talks about his Petzval-meets-Glastonbury experience in this exclusive.

Hello Taio, please introduce yourself to the readers of Lomography Magazine.

Hi there, nice to meet you! I’m Taio Konishi, a 30-year-old man who loves photographs and beer. Usually taking pictures at music shows and portraits as a photographer.

How did you get into photography?

It is because of my friend who has analog cameras. At first glance, I felt like “it looks really interesting” and my first days with those cameras felt like playing around with a new toy, but now I’m completely into the photography world.

What aspect of being a music photographer do you like most?

I enjoy most the fact I can communicate with artists who have great sensibility. We, music photographers, have semi-vulgar love towards subjects.

What is your first impression of Petzval 85mm Art Lens?

Minimal and classic. Just perfect!

How was it shooting with Petzval 85mm?

Really amazed by its bokeh which was produced by Russian optics. I had a feeling what kind of subjects would harness the lens’s potential, and tested it.

What camera did you use with the Petzval? Do you have any tips for people who intend to use the same camera set up?

I mounted the Petzval on a Canon EOS 5D Mark 3. When I shoot with the Petzval, I set it up on AV mode, exposure +1, with always open aperture. I use ISO range 100 – 400 depending on the weather.

Any tips you want to share to those who want to shoot the Petzval 85mm lens at music festivals?

If you choose trees as a background, you can have great swirly bokeh effect. This lens really catch attention, so you can make friends easily.

What is your favorite picture taken with the lens? Did anything interesting happen while you were shooting with it?

My favorite photo is the one below. I took this photo a few minutes before the headliner of the day started performing. At that time most of people went to see the main act, so a silent and calm atmosphere surrounded this couple. The couple calmly enjoyed their time while people got excited on the other side. This scene really portrays Glastonbury Festival.

Which was the best show for you during the Glastonbury Festival?

Actually I enjoyed a lot for walking around the festival site and I did’t see any headliners this time. My favorite act is Paul Weller. I can’t believe he is 57 when I saw his intensive music and moves. He looks so cool.

What are your plans for the near future?

From July 18, I will exhibit the Glastonbury photos at a book store called “Nostos Books,” which has a strong lineup of art books in Tokyo. Those photos were captured by four Lomography cameras and film so I would like you to come to my exhibition, Lomographers! Here are the exhibit details.

Also, I’m going to the Fujirock Festival at the end of this month.
