Lulworth Cove

12

Five miles of the most beautiful coastline in England.

Lulworth Cove is a perfect horseshoe-shaped bay created by the sea. The water in this bay is so clear and colorful, you could easily mistake it for the Bahamas or the Caribbean. It can be quite crowded, so I advise you to make some effort and hike away after you took pictures of the Cove. There are few directions for walking, but we have chosen to go to Mupe Bay. The footpath is within an MoD restricted area and it is only open on weekends, and throughout the whole of August. It was a stunning walk along the cliff top.

You better have your walking shoes on because reaching that beach requires climbing down the cliffs a little, and also jumping from stone to stone if you want to look around. Mupe Bay faces east and is well sheltered from the prevailing winds.

If you don’t want to go that far, you can walk to Fossil Forest, and see history reveal itself as the modern rock gallery tells the story of Lulworth from 150 million years ago to the present day.

Another option would be to visit an atmospheric ruined village of Tyneham. This tiny village, nestling above Worbarrow Bay was requisitioned for army training during World War II, and was never returned to the villagers. It now remains as an eerie yet fascinating ruin, although the church and school have now been restored to display the village’s unusual history. The army still conducts firing exercises so access to the village and the gunnery ranges around it are restricted, the Wareham Tourist Information Centre on 01929 552740 will have information on opening days.

And last but not least – the stunning Lulworth Castle, which is surrounded by a beautiful and extensive parkland. A great deal of the area has public access but there are also permissive walks on the private estate.

There are no pubs anywhere on the way, so fill yourself up in one of the pubs of Lulworth Village.

Looks like you had a wonderful time and not too many tourists, did you go to Wareham as well?

Looks great, but while the text says it is in England, the map says Tasmania?!

Loved the pictures. If I were doomed to spend a photowalk here, I would not complain. Thanks for sharing.

@kylewis it was Easter actually. There were a lot of people in Lulworth town itself, and quite few down on that beach. Not too many though. And while hiking on that route I am talking about we met not more than just 4 people. was marvelous!

@neja Lulworth is also a tiny seaside town in Tasmania. A friend of mine has a place there, quite beautiful, but yours looks equally amazing from your photos. A lot of places in Australia are named after places in England, so I guess they often get mixed up in a map search.
